Wynn Casino and Cosmopolitan Ready for 100% Capacity
The Nevada Gaming Control Board has approved Wynn Resorts Las Vegas properties and the Cosmopolitan to open at 100% capacity.
In Nevada, the state set a goal to be open at 100% capacity by June. The path to this percentage includes continued mask wearing, social distancing, and vaccinations. The casinos in the state have been encouraged to see the majority of their staff members vaccinated in order to be able to open at 100% capacity. For Wynn Resorts properties and the Cosmopolitan, that time is now. The Nevada Gaming Control Board decided to give the green light to the three properties in the region as they have seen the majority of employees vaccinated.
Just a few days ago, it was announced that Wynn Resorts is now allowed to open fully. The company has vaccinated around 88% of its employees in Las Vegas. The occupancy levels and physical distancing requirements at the property can now be dissolved.
The gaming areas at the Wynn Las Vegas and the Encore will be allowed to offer 100% services. Any plexiglass dividers that were placed on slot machines and table games can be removed. While these changes are occurring, players and employees must still wear face masks and follow safety and health guidelines.
Wynn was able to reach the high percentage of vaccinations among employees due to its own requirements. The company told employees that they must submit a weekly negative test if they choose to not be vaccinated.
The cost of testing was left up to the employee, so most have already decided to vaccinate because of the cost or due to wanting to decrease their chances of catching the deadly virus. This tactic is one of several that was used by operators to try and encourage employees to take the vaccination.
The Cosmopolitan has also been approved for 100% capacity after 80% of its workforce have been proven to be vaccinated. State gaming regulators are happy to see the high percentage of vaccinations and are rewarding such operators with the full-service option.
Just as the Wynn properties, the Cosmopolitan can remove plastic dividers and social distancing restrictions from inside the casino. The operator saw the vaccination process as a way for things to get back to normal as well as to further protect employees and guests.
This casino decided to take a different tactic when it came to encouraging employees to vaccinate. The Strip casino chose to reward those who took the vaccination. Almost $1 million has been paid in cash bonuses to individuals who made the decision for the shot. Employees have until May 8 to receive a bonus.
The deadline for vaccination was extended as more employees started taking advantage of the bonuses. There are still a few days left for employees to be vaccinated and qualify for the bonus cash.
Back in mid-April, the Cosmopolitan started a campaign for employees to provide education on the vaccination process. They also announced the incentive program and started offering on-site vaccination options.
Employees were able to utilize the tools they were given. Questions could be asked to help make the decision on whether or not to take the vaccination. Employees also didn’t have to travel far since the casino provided the shots on-site.
For casinos in the southern portion of Clark County, the capacity levels were increased to 80% from 50% over the weekend. Gaming regulators have reported that the percentage will increase after 60% of the eligible population have been given the COVID-19 vaccination.
Now it will be interesting to see which casinos are next when it comes to opening at 100% capacity. Others like Caesars and the Las Vegas Sands have set up on-site clinics for shots but it is unclear as to how much of their workforce are vaccinated.
