City of Doral Fights Back Against Potential Trump Casino
The city of Doral, Florida does not want Donald Trump to be able to build a casino, so efforts have been made to ban any potential projects.
Doral is not playing around when it comes to a potential casino coming to the Florida city. The City Council recently took matters into its own hands to ensure that it is difficult for a property owned by Donald Trump to potentially offer casino gaming. Legal changes to the gambling industry would possibly allow a Doral property owned by Trump to provide gambling, an option the town does not want to see happen.
New Ordinance in Doral
The City Council voted this week in approval of a new ordinance that prohibits any type of gambling activity within the city limits. The vote was 4 to 0 on the matter. The ordinance declares that casinos and electronic simulated gambling machines could negatively impact the communities in the area. The Council and Mayor feel that it is in the best interest of the residents of Doral to create this ban.
The city of Doral is located in Miami-Dade County. This county is one of only two that is now allowed to offer slot gaming at facilities offering pari-mutuel services. In Doral though, there are no such venues in operation. Talk quickly arose within the Trump family about potentially allowing a Doral club property to become a spot for gaming.
Governor Ron DeSantis reached a new compact agreement with the Seminole Tribe in April, allowing the tribe to maintain its monopoly in the gambling industry as well as add new games like roulette and craps. Sports betting was also allowed.
In the compact, it also says that the tribe cannot interfere with slot machine gaming licensing in Broward or Miami-Dade counties. Any new venues must be at least 15 miles in a straight line from a casino operated by the Seminoles.
Being a long-time supporter and ‘friend’ of Donald Trump, it is believed that DeSantis added this portion to the compact as a way to please Trump. The Trump Doral property is just 17 miles from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.
Before the compact was agreed upon, Eric Trump, son of Donald, stated to the press that Trump Doral ‘is unmatched from a gaming perspective.’ The Trump property is struggling right now in a financial sense and adding gaming might be a way the family thinks they could recoup losses.
Taking Early Action
It seems Doral Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez and the City Council are taking early steps to try and stop the Trump family from even attempting to offer gambling in the city. In speaking with the Miami Herald, the Mayor said that the new ordinance is just another safeguard to put in place to stop gambling from coming to Doral without a vote by the residents.
The Mayor said that officials wanted to be sure to weigh in and they are planning to take whatever steps are needed to stop gaming from being an option in the city. The ordinance will see gambling banned in Doral unless the city has a ballot referendum and locals decide to vote in favor of allowing the activity to take place.
It will be interesting to see if any steps are taken by the Trump family or anyone else in this regard to try and push back against the new ordinance. Only time will tell if there will ever be gaming in Doral or if the new ordinance is enough to stop any type of casino gambling effort from taking place.
